history

Tommy’s Rock Residences will serve to preserve, promote and celebrate African-Americans’ rich history and culture in Roxbury, Boston, and the surrounding regions.  Research shows that the land beneath the ledge of Tommy’s Rock was bought in the spring of 1845 and was sometimes called Tommy’s Rock Church. The land was also known as a favorite resort because of its fine view of the surrounding region. It was also referenced as the “Rocky Pasture” because, despite the rough terrain, it abounded in wildflowers. “Tommy” for whom the land is named, was Tommy Hommogen, a black man ( perhaps black- Indian), a formerly enslaved person who lived in a gothic cottage at Washington and Circuit Street. He is reported to have worked on a nearby cattle farm and been instrumental in discovering and cultivating this land.  Thus, because Tommy’s Rock has a such rich black history, its black owners and developers are proud to be at the forefront of this project.
